25 August 2021

JOHANNESBURG, 25 AUGUST 2021 – The AfroCentric Group is delighted to announce that AfroCentric Group Chief Information Officer and CEO of AfroCentric Technologies Sello Mmakau has been named a winner in the CEO Today Healthcare Awards for 2021.

CEO Today's Healthcare Awards recognise the vital contribution made by those working in the healthcare sector, celebrating and rewarding the most successful, innovative and forward-thinking CEOs in business today.

Mmakau has won the Global CEO in Health Award in recognition of the role he has played in the modernisation of AfroCentric Group's digital technologies and infrastructure.

Mmakau, who has been part of the AfroCentric Group leadership team for three years, is responsible for the Group's Digital Strategy, IT Applications and Infrastructure, revenue, new products and markets.

Under his leadership AfroCentric has successfully implemented technological and digital solutions that have made it easier for the Group's subsidiaries to provide a seamless service to their customers. These have included self-service solutions for the schemes that AfroCentric   administers, including chatbots, portals, Covid-19 digital vaccination, telemedicine services and real-time digital dashboards for call centre performance management.

He also led the speedy rollout of remote-work technologies for more than 5,000 employees, including call-centre agents, in the wake of President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement of level 5 restrictions last year to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Commenting on the award, Mmakau said he is proud to have been able to represent the Group on a global stage and credits his success to the support of AfroCentric Group's leadership, which has created an enabling environment for his team to explore and implement innovative ideas in support of the Group's vision of providing affordable healthcare to all South Africans. "I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to lead a forward-thinking team that constantly explores new ways to use technology for the ultimate benefit of our clients, including medical schemes and their members," he said.

AfroCentric Group CEO Ahmed Banderker said Mmakau's award was testament to AfroCentric's commitment to providing affordable healthcare through innovation. "I congratulate Mmakau, who has consistently demonstrated that it is only through innovating the way we do business that we will be able to transform the healthcare sector and enable affordable access to millions more South Africans," he said.
